Looking after the planet we help to shape.

JCB machinery plays a huge part in sculpting the modern world. From agriculture to construction, power generation and access, our machines are on site in over 150 countries around the globe. It’s a fact that we’re immensely proud of.

Our journey to make our business and our machines more sustainable is something we’re proud of too. Here are just some of the environmental initiatives we’ve delivered in recent years.

In a world that’s increasingly under pressure from environmental degradation, finding innovative and sustainable solutions to our customers’ needs and managing the resources that go into our products is more important than ever. So we’ve also included some insights into some of the challenges we plan to tackle in the coming years.

planning for the future

We’re very proud of what we’ve achieved to reduce JCB’s environmental impact. But we have more to do. And as awareness, understanding and science evolve, we will identify new priorities, new challenges, new risks and new opportunities. As such, we’ll continue harnessing the latest technology and knowledge in order to carry on improving our environmental performance.

Here are some of the key areas we’ll be focusing on over the next few years:

Total waste

Number one on our priority list is reducing total waste. Linked to this is the issue of single use plastics which, for many years, have been a wasteful use of resources. We also now recognise that they contribute to pollution of our oceans, harming wildlife, and preventing recovery of this valuable resource. We’re currently working hard to understand how we can avoid single use plastics and packaging in our business.

Wood waste

We’ll also be working to get a better understanding of where the wooden packaging we buy in for parts distribution comes from. We’ll see if there are any actions we need to take to ensure that we are only using sustainable timber in our operations.

Chemicals of concern

To reduce risks to the environment, workers and machine users, we’ll be working to identify and reduce any chemicals of concern in our supply chain.

Car use

We’ll be continuing to look into initiatives to encourage workers to car share, reducing the impact of our collective journeys to work.

Paint

As new technologies mature, there may be opportunities to move away from solvents in our processes. We’ll also be looking to manage our processes to reduce solvent and material waste.

ISO standards

We’ll implement ISO 14001: 2015 in any plants that aren’t yet accredited. This will keep us focused on driving improvements in our environmental performance.

Engines

In terms of products, we’ll be delivering electric solutions to market in our compact range, and we’ll shortly be launching our cleanest ever diesel – the Stage V engine.
